NOD32 Review
Category General Techo Stuff
Well, what on earth is NOD32, sounds like a kids carton or a new type of explosive…!
Its actually a virus scanner.. and in my opinion a pretty darn good one.

Firstly so I don’t get my ass threatened with legal action yet again…!
This is my personal opinion on the product and in no way is a definitive review… If you object to my opinion then feel free to add your comments or email me and I’ll correct myself if I’m wrong.
Well, I’m a Norton Anti-Virus man, its kinda the easy choice… Everyone’s running it, does a good job etc etc. This time I went to renew and for whatever reason it wouldn’t accept my credit card details… So I spat the dummy and decided to do some research on other options.
My primary needs where;
It must work with Sygate (my software firewall)
It must be able to scan on a schedule
It must be able to scan the network drives on my server.
The options I found that looked applicable where
Trend Micro (PC-cillin)
AVG
NOD32
McAfee
Kaspersky Anti-Virus
Found all these different products that have inbuilt firewalls etc like Trend Micro (PC-cillin) looked great but I didn’t want the firewall as I’m already running Sygate and I really love it. It’s a little more complex to configure than ZoneAlarm but I prefer to have the extra control it. Plus it gives pretty graphs
After loading up and playing with several trial versions of software which caused various levels of issues with Sygate I finally settled on NOD32. The interface is unusual but didn’t take long to get used to. You have lots of control over it.
My initial install ended up with lots of memory errors…. Did some research and couldn’t find any answers so did the un-install and then a custom install and removed the HTTP monitoring (ie small’ish firewall) Have been running it now for a week and it all seems to be getting along fine.
Whilst it sucks CPU when its running its REALLY quick at doing the complete scan. I didn’t do any quantitative comparisons but it “felt” quicker than Nortons Anti-Virus. Of course it would have significant differences depending on what options are turned on etc and I am way to lazy to actually do all those tests and publish the results.
So in summary whilst I have NO complaints about Norton Anti-Virus I’m happy that I’ve done the research and even happier that I found a product that in my opinion offers the same or more features.
My suggestion when your doing the research is be really careful about the information you find. Much of it comes from sites that are advertising one product or another. That obviously doesn’t provide must of an un-biased opinion so when your looking around make sure you find some credible sites and cross compare.
Importantly if you find something better feel free to post a comment and share your thoughts…!
